Plan your heating oil tank inspection

Follow our practical tips and gather all the necessary documents to get your heating oil tank inspection quickly and stress-free

Mandatory:

  • Have access to an accessible and functioning power outlet (minimum 16A). Failing this, the inspection will be stopped. No certificate can be issued, and the visit will be fully charged. This requirement only applies to underground tanks.
  • Provide access to the boiler.
  • For non-accessible tanks, ensure that the actual fuel level is below 90% of the tank’s capacity in order to carry out the test.
  • For tanks with a capacity of 3,000L or more (except tanks located in water protection zones, where the threshold is 100L), provide the environmental permit known as the “Class 3 Declaration”.
  • For tanks of more than 3,000L, or 100L and above in water protection zones, the Class 3 Declaration must be completed and submitted to the competent department of the municipality where the property is located. You must also have a copy available on the day of the inspection.

In the absence of these mandatory elements, the inspection will be stopped. No certificate can be issued, but a fixed fee of €150 will be charged for the visit.

Where possible:

  • The tank invoice or building specifications mentioning the heating oil tank
  • The certificate confirming the installation of the tank and its connection in accordance with the applicable requirements, issued by a qualified expert
  • The periodic tightness test certificate for the entire installation, issued by an approved technician
  • The technical data sheet of the material used to waterproof the containment area (if applicable only)

If applicable:

  • Certificate of conformity for the tank’s double-walled structure.
  • For an above-ground tank: exemption granted by the competent authorities regarding the requirement for secondary containment.
  • For an underground tank > 10,000L:
    • Cathodic protection certificate issued by a qualified cathodic protection expert.

In the absence of these mandatory elements, the inspection will be stopped. No certificate can be issued, but a fixed fee of €150 will be charged for the visit.
